Don Diego is a place where the mountain jungle meets the Caribbean Sea. You have the opportunity to discover this extraordinary landscape uniquely - by floating on a tyre down a river, among lush vegetation and wildlife.
Your trip begins with a drive from Santa Marta to the Don Diego River, where you’ll hop onto a tyre and drift towards the river’s mouth. It’s the perfect opportunity to observe tropical nature up close - from towering trees to exotic birds and animals living along the riverbanks.
When you reach the river’s mouth, an exciting short motorboat ride will take you to the Taironaka reserve. In this place, the remains of the Tayrona civilisation have been preserved. During a guided walk, you’ll discover stone terraces, ancestral paths, and bridges that once formed part of one of the settlements of this pre-Hispanic culture. At Casa Museo, you’ll learn about the tribes of the Sierra Nevada and their fascinating traditions that have survived through the centuries.
After this journey back in time, you’ll return to the Don Diego River for a well-deserved break – you can swim in its refreshing waters, relax on the riverbank or simply listen to the sounds of the jungle.
To end the day, you’ll walk back to the starting point and return to Santa Marta, taking with you memories of one of the most natural and authentic corners of the region.
